As with any additional field extension, you select to use the variable field extension when creating the additional field definition in InterAction Windows Client or InterAction Administrator. The variable field extension displays its own settings dialog box to collect information specific to the extension.

Configure an Additional Field to Use the Variable Field Extension

Create or edit an additional field as you normally would. You can use the extension with either global or folder-specific fields.
For details, see Create an Additional Field Definition or Edit an Additional Field Definition.
- In the Edit Additional Field dialog box, select Extension for the Type.

Choose the Browse button. From the list of extensions, select InterAction Variable Field Extension and choose OK.
The Field Extension Setting dialog box will appear.
- Define each field to be included in the additional field. You can define up to eight columns. For details, see Defining the Multiple Columns.

Enter the Format String you want to use. This is the text that appears in the Additional Information view in InterAction.
You can include both static text and tokens representing the fields.

- If any of the fields you defined are list fields, define the list items. See Creating Lists and List Items for details.
- If the additional field should allow multiple values, select the Multiple Values check box.
- If you want to display an extra column of information for the multiple-value field, select Include Relationship Field. Enter the Field Name and the Format String.
- For details about the format string for this field, see Specifying the Display of Field Values.
- Select one of the Export options. For details, see Defining How Field Values Are Exported.
- Choose OK to close each open dialog box.
