When you create a relationship type, you must also define how the name will appear throughout the various views and dialog boxes in InterAction. You do this by setting the name format.
There are four name formats you need to set for a relationship type.
| Format | Description and Usage |
|---|---|
| Name | The simple name for the relationship, such as “Board Member.” This is used when displaying a list of relationships in both Windows and the Web Client. |
| Former Name | The simple name for the relationship once it has become former, for example “Former Board Member.” This is used when displaying a list of relationships in both Windows and the Web Client. |
| Sentence |
The version of the name you would use if you placed the relationship in a sentence with the two parties of the relationship on either side. For example, for the Board Member relationship this would be “is on the Board of Directors of.” The sentence would then read “David Adami is on the Board of Directors of Justus Software.” This format is used in the following places:

| Former Sentence |
The version of the name to use when placing the former relationship in a sentence. For example, for the Board Member relationship this would be “was on the Board of Directors of.” The sentence would then read “David Adami was on the Board of Directors of Justus Software.” This format is used in the following places:

Editing the Name Formats
You edit the name formats for a type on the Name Format tab in the New/Edit Relationship Type dialog box.
When you change any of the name formats for a relationship type, any existing relationships that use that type are automatically updated.
When you enter the sentence and former sentence, you need to ensure that the wording will work within the sentences displayed by Windows and the Web Client. The New/Edit Relationship Type dialog box includes usage example to help you set the correct wording. These examples update as you change the text.
