Each contact type can optionally have an associated Web Client profile and search. These are used to provide additional context around contacts when users work with contact types in the Web Client:
-
A Web Client profile is a set of attributes that can apply to a contact. Typically, profiles display additional field values and they provide contextual information about the contact. When you associate a contact type with a profile, the profile information is used for the preview pane when viewing the list of contacts with the specified contact type.
For example, the contact type Client Personnel is tied to the Client Personnel profile. When a user selects this contact type from the contact types page, the preview pane uses the summary fields from the profile.
-
A Web Client search form provides criteria fields users can fill in to find particular contacts. When you associate a contact type with a search, the search form is used when a user selects to Search this List for a contact type
For example, in the figure below, the Client contact type has been tied to the Clients search form. If a user selects the Search this List link, the Clients search form is displayed in a popup window. This allows users to find a subset of the contact type.
Preview Pane Comes from a Web Client Profile
[A] The information in the preview pane comes from the related profile (the Client Personnel profile in this example).
Search This List Link Displays the Associated Search Form
[A] Select a contact type from the list of available types.
[B] Selecting Search this List displays the related search form (the Client search in this example).
If you choose to tie a contact type to a profile or search, make sure the criteria for the contact type and the criteria for the profile or search work together. For example, connect a contact type to a profile that uses the type as its criteria to ensure that the contacts have information for the preview pane.
If you don’t tie a contact type to a profile, the preview pane displays folder-specific additional fields and notes instead.
